story of
furled leaders

Furled leaders have been around far longer than many anglers realize. Their origins reach back to the early days of fly fishing when fly lines were woven or furled from horsehair. The process used to create those early fly lines is very similar to the one used today to manufacture our modern furled leaders. Of course we now have a wide variety of materials and equipment that makes the modern furled leader a thing that Isaak Walton or Dame Juliana Berners could only have dreamed of.

first rattle out of the bag
When a furled leader is removed from its packaging one may notice its resemblance to a fly line in miniature. The taper, from the butt to the tippet end is smooth and continuous. The material memory possessed by extruded, tapered mono leaders simply is not there. Give a furled leader a brisk flick of the wrist. It lays out smoothly, like a cast fly line.

why furled leaders?
Any angler who has thrown a fly line knows the joy of a controlled loop, seeing one's fly land exactly where intended, right in that "sweet spot". These same anglers are also all too familiar with the frustration that comes with the cast that was just not quite right. Some leaders sometimes don't turn over as we'd like them to. And extruded monofilament leaders may retain material memory that demands smoothing out prior to being able to fish with them. (When a store-bought extruded, tapered leader is removed from its packaging it tends to curl up like a snake).

furled leaders drawback
Furled leaders do possess a drawback. Due to their tendency to lay out smoothly, as an extension of the fly line, some special casts are not so easily performed. Not impossible, just a bit more work.

my leaders
My leaders are constructed with a loop in each end. This makes attaching tippet simple and removes the need to tie knots in or on the leader. My standard leaders are constructed with fly tying thread. The larger heavy duty and salt water leaders are constructed of monofilament. (of course special request orders may be arranged in advance).
